scientific concepts, the status of the technological need, the limitations of/ N* L+ o% R2 }3 _
the technology, the pros and cons of the materials available, how the; `/ M: K7 }# c
materials are applied, evaluated and fabricated, how various materials are
3 p% G. A% d1 T5 P/ \+ b9 kintegrated to form an assembly that can be used in practice, the
9 c3 D( ~* x* t' pperformance and durability of the competing materials for each specific
_3 v6 b* _4 C. s; d. Vapplication, and the future directions.
% h8 S1 u% e! g/ Y$ o1 t8 i' u5 VThe books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on: f7 h2 c8 U4 |2 m
materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area5 U/ y/ d; c' y' r
largely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of6 }. g" }+ n- @4 p- d1 Q
materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be% k+ H- g" a' m1 m0 I+ H" ?& e
distinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of2 `: C) t' P( s( X+ c
applications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,

composites and semiconductors, which constitute the traditional classes
! ~$ {3 g( a' tof materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of
$ ]4 f! J& h& h$ b& O$ w$ `' wapplications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather
4 m6 ?8 o' d# R; u9 {( ~/ v2 s% athan just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of
! `$ {+ K# w, U* H. Pmaterials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between
I. X, f7 T! @$ L u- vscience and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to
- v8 l1 V: _4 }8 ^) p1 i# `insufficient communication between the science community and the- z7 h' h2 g# L0 M( ?
application community. This book series is intended to alleviate this+ k, \6 v6 U- I2 b& J' ]. ?3 J* g
problem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The P1 { w7 F/ z G
books do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in* K* M0 | O% F; m' I: s
materials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,2 S, e2 k/ \/ P* P; e1 y% F
the books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and+ @; O4 |" q8 V. o: F
graduate levels. In addition, due to the timeliness and importance of the
