& a7 C5 l+ O. V' m* v& V7 ~The books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on

materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be7 j( w% }8 N* e& z

applications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,

of materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of( D. f9 A+ N: ~5 P8 X8 G$ C
applications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather( I+ m8 ~( u$ ~# Z
than just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of6 g8 [+ Y1 l% R
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between

: r: N r: s: f' c; e( e7 b) oinsufficient communication between the science community and the4 b {% f. H$ h0 M6 i+ R: p4 |- y, ^& i
application community. This book series is intended to alleviate this* W( A0 Z0 {2 \$ M, ~
problem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The7 Z3 e) f7 J R/ m& q, Z
books do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in

are expected to be used by professionals as reference books as well.
