One-of-a-kind effort? Deliverables or products? Complex? No authority over other groups? Budget?
0 @' a* Z2 g" D6 h8 E* KA project is a unique effort to introduce or produce a new product or service conforming to certain
9 }! L3 C  Z$ i. j" J' p' A3 V; uspecifications and applicable standards. This effort is completed within the project parameters including fixed) n2 ?; @5 J8 ~
time, cost, human resources, and asset limits. Projects are said to be similar to the mating of two elephants:% m. e3 S# N9 F( z7 [
They start at a very high level with lots of noise and activity, but it takes forever for anything to materialize!( R2 ?* I0 q4 c3 |4 b% h. H8 i" x- z
A more serious definition is that a project is a well-organized development of an end product that had a
, ^' y" M  h8 ]' `# Zdiscrete beginning, a discrete end, and a discrete deliverable. Our goal is to help you become more organized2 G/ [1 c! K. J
as you work toward this objective.7 |  C0 `# s5 {* u2 }5 l2 d- ~

6 [' t4 P# s5 N( gProject management is the discipline that relates all of those words that you thought of that apply to project.# }* v% p1 P% k
This discipline cultivates the expertise to plan, monitor, track, and manage the people, the time, the budget,
( l2 G, z/ a  ~  a* }- W$ nand the quality of the work on projects. Project management fulfills two purposes: (1) It provides the8 v4 o1 d7 |- L4 I9 k
technical and business documentation to communicate the plan and, subsequently, the status that facilitates
. q0 H3 ^$ T& Dcomparison of the plan against actual performance, and (2) it supports the development of the managerial8 \' o2 q6 x7 C
skills to facilitate better management of the people and their project(s). Project management is a proactive# Z  }4 V' _) J) z$ G* W1 z0 S
style of management. Negotiation techniques and good communication and analytical skills are integral parts7 L4 P* t/ h( K/ [, j! R; H6 p
of this approach. Another key ingredient is the evaluation of performance against those objectives. Central to
9 b: H. Q. n2 _3 R8 [this management style is the application of high standards of quality to the project work.
