The books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on
/ h8 K# L, X& z7 Cmaterials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area; R7 Y) I( }! b
largely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of7 \# ?# q& d/ H. q! G4 V% X
materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be
$ s. M0 @1 m# Rdistinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of/ @* h0 Y1 j' O9 q/ d
applications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,, F1 z  D. q: @* r9 m. u
the relevant materials may include metals, polymers, ceramics,
5 m7 r/ N! s) j7 R4 A4 {# acomposites and semiconductors, which constitute the traditional classes
. |9 {# U# r: f' H6 A1 cof materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of
9 z) @. l9 f; R5 |- L8 vapplications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather
) y0 w8 z1 ~$ K! R% Q6 Xthan just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of& N  z, N" E! b+ i# R
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between
- T5 J4 T6 d7 Q5 Fscience and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to
' x6 G% y5 q3 m9 l; oinsufficient communication between the science community and the
. O, c$ x$ S; r7 W/ Capplication community. This book series is intended to alleviate this
" }2 S% {: Q" R& S# C6 aproblem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The" R: ~$ _5 C5 R1 t
books do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in' p/ a1 f7 i' P
materials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,
  g4 c! ]1 `& Q4 V5 R. _  l& ethe books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and
9 Q8 ?" u2 R3 f6 o: @0 Ograduate levels. In addition, due to the timeliness and importance of the
