2009 Why might SolidWorks 2010 (or SolidWorks Explorer 2010) not start after rebooting the computer?

This is a known issue that only appears under the following conditions:$ F( n! [* l9 l! {& T
# w4 O* f2 [9 n# T
Microsoft Windows® XP 32-bit + specific Data Execution Prevention (DEP) settings.
( _9 x2 E D8 p- i- ?The problem has been submitted to the SolidWorks Development team with the SPR below:. j& M( F$ E: G/ @
SPR 524232: SolidWorks 2010 no longer starts after the computer has been restarted. Note that using another user account to start SolidWorks via Run As allows SolidWorks to start until next reboot...

' h3 [( y0 \; R3 r& cThe workaround to this is as follows:
z& j n) g8 f# X; {1. Right Mouse Button on My Computer and select Properties; S j+ u$ Y" |/ }6 H
2. On the Advanced tab>Performance>click Settings! E% E; H5 ^" e% R8 R$ h
3. Go to the Data Execution Prevention tab and most likely the setting "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select" will be active+ b2 x5 z% p. r; h' E7 [& n
4. In the exception list see if Windows Explorer (explorer.exe) is listed. If it is, then select it and choose to Remove it from the list _/ E7 K' Z+ K/ K* Q* _5 E
5. OK out of all settings windows and reboot.
! A2 I. a/ \- ^) Z% `9 L0 M4 ] 0 p5 y/ u" S9 E4 J
Special case:
1 F3 Q9 S% L a" b9 L6 H! C4 AWhen doing Step 3 above if the user currently has the option "Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only" active, then do these alternate steps:
$ x% C. y2 c# o+ y/ H6 J) _4. Toggle the other DEP option on so the list of possibly previously specified exceptions can be accessed5 X* q. y" @8 X9 W
5. If Windows Explorer is in that exceptions list, then do the following process:$ J% r' I" j5 s: T
a. Remove Windows Explorer from the list1 p1 m& H( G5 `- F" A$ Q# L! J7 K
b. Reboot
; K& P6 ?* h5 a P+ `1 I/ P& @ c. Go back in the DEP interface again and set the option back to “Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only"' D0 ~2 v5 P) G/ Z" }# j
d. Reboot once more. h0 |# z, A# B" W j- H& d* t. l
