Each book in the series addresses materials that serve various functions

materials are applied, evaluated and fabricated, how various materials are
! Q! i* s! \& uintegrated to form an assembly that can be used in practice, the

application, and the future directions.; v$ t" J# {. U
The books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on
/ C( S# x5 U6 V: J9 _materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area
% f$ b `4 K- h. R2 \9 ]4 b7 P' Rlargely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of
0 Z6 P5 N) z' Q$ Kmaterials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be+ B* x# f5 T/ [0 |2 }# Z' X
distinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of
6 {# N4 x1 n3 w9 G, @1 e+ kapplications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,

of materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of1 P: K: w- J1 @3 n: R" u
applications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather% f) x( ^: B N3 _3 W
than just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of% A: ~+ Y: h) b5 j6 |2 [& D- c9 ?
materials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between
) m; R% K, r& tscience and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to* e, Z B* p a4 Z. H; i2 ]8 c' d2 F
insufficient communication between the science community and the
5 M e8 I4 W6 u: r" r- ^) i+ papplication community. This book series is intended to alleviate this3 H; |0 c+ a0 I& C! J. x
problem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The
" f- E" ^. S$ e' x7 |6 Rbooks do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in
( q' [3 K& a& Smaterials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,) E) o- n; d# {- { o* v1 N9 a
the books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and
