This is the inaugural volume of the book series “Engineering Materials
for Technological Needs”. The technological needs relevant to this
series include those that are related to the electronic, optical, magnetic,
# ]* S4 G1 H' f( m- u  E; ythermal, electrochemical, energy, environmental, structural, construction,
aerospace, automobile, security, manufacturing and medical industries.
- P9 _( a+ @# ^# s2 KEach book in the series addresses materials that serve various functions
in a particular area of technological need by describing the relevant
( M8 d# P9 D3 w; n/ Uscientific concepts, the status of the technological need, the limitations of
9 _5 F4 S9 x6 u. X+ d" o5 `- N+ m  Wthe technology, the pros and cons of the materials available, how the
materials are applied, evaluated and fabricated, how various materials are
integrated to form an assembly that can be used in practice, the
: [2 w/ {& Y) O& vperformance and durability of the competing materials for each specific
application, and the future directions.
4 J+ m- y0 h3 I( z) uThe books in this series differ from other books in their emphasis on
materials for technological needs. Existing books in the materials area
8 y" I" X+ J/ B: Glargely focus on the fundamental science of particular classes of
materials. The material classes in these existing books tend to be
: O: E& O* v2 H% E: N5 n, adistinguished from the viewpoint of science rather than the viewpoint of
applications. In contrast, from the viewpoint of a particular application,
$ c' Q" q; s0 A( l* d9 o4 n0 bthe relevant materials may include metals, polymers, ceramics,
composites and semiconductors, which constitute the traditional classes
of materials. The impetus of scientific research hinges on the success of
; E' a" w4 G& X' }  `/ `applications. It is important to develop materials for applications rather
. C. T/ F5 o7 [. x/ Hthan just studying materials for the sake of advancing the science of
0 b0 ^( k( G: u! A+ X3 O, B4 smaterials. In spite of the obvious importance of the linkage between
5 W) p. e6 Y5 S& @7 {. uscience and applications, this linkage has long been weak, due to
5 p& _' @4 y0 G4 L, ?6 [insufficient communication between the science community and the
application community. This book series is intended to alleviate this
6 V. k: x6 m) G& z2 ^. I, U9 Wproblem by addressing materials from an application perspective. The
7 K) E* I7 `$ A0 V) jbooks do not assume prior knowledge of the applications and require from its readers the equivalence of only one introductory course in
materials science. Due to the tutorial nature of the books in the series,
' H( o; L- @5 ^. lthe books are expected to be useful as textbooks in undergraduate and
4 c( k2 ^/ D) V% \- e+ J  hgraduate levels. In addition, due to the timeliness and importance of the
& r0 t( Y# b! e8 ^% b' i$ Mtopics and to the inclusion of an up-to-date list of references, these books
; G- }( V6 w5 M( @are expected to be used by professionals as reference books as well.
